What It's Like Working at Accutemp

We are a small commercial HVAC and refrigeration shop in Loveland. Here is an honest look at the work, the culture, and the kind of person who does well here, straight from the owner.

If you are thinking about applying to work here, you deserve a straight answer about what you would be walking into. This is that answer. I am Nick Yaw, I own Accutemp Services, and I wrote this myself because I want you to hear it from me, not from a job board template.

    Who We Are

Accutemp is a small commercial HVAC and refrigeration shop based in Loveland, Colorado. We have been serving Northern Colorado for over eleven years. We started because we enjoy solving problems and working with our hands, and that is still the heart of the company. Our techs enjoy a puzzle. Being in a big brewery room, or up on a roof on a sunny day, is genuinely the best part of the job for a lot of us.

We run on two missions that cannot be separated, and we put them in writing:

"Accutemp Services repairs environments for others to pursue their missions. At the same time, we develop individuals into leaders who unlock their potential and build lives of meaning and abundance for their families."

That second sentence is not decoration. Developing people is half the reason this company exists. If you come here and do the work, my job is to make sure you leave every year more skilled, more confident, and more valuable than the year before.

The Work Is Commercial, and That Matters

We do not do residential. No houses, no homeowners. Our customers are restaurants, breweries, grocery stores, and facilities across Northern Colorado, and the equipment reflects that. One day you are on a rooftop unit above a restaurant. The next you are diagnosing a walk-in cooler behind a grocery store, or getting a brewery's chiller back online, or fixing the kitchen equipment a restaurant needs before dinner service.

Commercial work is more technical than residential, and it makes you a better tech faster. The systems are bigger, the failures are more interesting, and the stakes are real. When a restaurant's refrigeration goes down, thousands of dollars of food are on the clock. Our customers feel the difference when a tech shows up who actually knows what they are doing, and they say so.

    Variety Is the Job

Because we are a small shop that handles HVAC, refrigeration, and kitchen equipment, you will not get pigeonholed into doing the same call on repeat. Our techs see a wider range of equipment in a year than techs at big single-lane companies see in five. If you get bored easily, that variety is a feature. If you want to master one narrow thing and never touch anything else, we are probably not your shop.

    How We Develop People

Development here is not a poster on a wall. It looks like this: new techs ride along with experienced ones until they are ready to run calls solo, and nobody gets thrown into the deep end to sink. When you hit a diagnosis you cannot crack, you call for help and someone talks you through it, because a tech who learns why a fix worked is worth more than one who just swaps parts until something sticks.

We also push certifications. EPA 608 is the floor, and from there we support techs chasing whatever makes them better at the trade. Every certification you earn makes you more valuable, and we would rather grow a great tech who might one day outgrow us than keep someone small so they stay. That is the bet this company is built on, and so far it has paid off for everyone involved.

    Direct Access to the Owner

At a big company, the owner is a name on the building. Here, I am in the shop, on the phone, and sometimes on the roof next to you. If you have a question about a diagnosis, you can call me. If you have an idea for how we should run something better, you can tell me at the shop and it can change that week. There are no layers between the techs and the person who makes decisions.

That cuts both ways, and I want to be honest about it. In a small shop, your work is visible. When you do great work, I know about it, and it shows up in how you advance. There is no hiding in a crowd here, in either direction.

    We Respect Your Time

This trade has a reputation for burning people out, and some shops earn that reputation. We try hard not to. Emergency work is part of commercial service, and on-call rotations exist, but we schedule like your family matters, because it does. The mission statement says we help people build lives of meaning and abundance for their families. You cannot do that if the job eats every evening and weekend.

Practically, that means realistic route planning instead of impossible days, honest communication about what a day holds, and a culture where asking for help is normal. Techs who came to us from bigger outfits mention this more than anything else.

    Who Thrives Here

We hire for character first and train skills second. The people who do best at Accutemp share a few traits:

    • They like puzzles. Diagnosing a weird failure sounds fun to them, not annoying
    • They take ownership. They treat every call like their own name is on the invoice
    • They are honest, especially when something went wrong or they do not know the answer
    • They want to grow. They ask questions, they study, they want the next certification
    • They are good with customers. Half this job is making a stressed business owner feel taken care of

Notice what is not on that list: ten years of experience. We have developed green apprentices into strong techs, and we will keep doing it. If you bring the attitude, we can teach the trade.
